EAST WENATCHEE — Neighbors rushed Monday afternoon to rescue three dogs from a single-wide mobile home engulfed in flames. The hounds were saved; the home was lost.

Francisco Bazan, a neighbor from across the street, kicked down the back door and three windows of a mobile home at 2112 S. Barker Drive to pull out two puppies and release an adult dog that bounded to safety from the burning structure. Minutes earlier, Bazan’s daughter, Darci, had phoned 911 to report the blaze.

“I kept kicking and yelling, thinking people or more dogs might be inside,” said Bazan, “but something exploded, so I was forced to back away.”

But other than the pets, no one was home at the time of the fire, said fire officials….

South Barker Drive has no fire hydrants, so crews hauled water in tenders to help bring the blaze under control and save surrounding property. Three vehicles and a travel trailer were parked in the yard around the mobile home, but were undamaged.

While firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, neighbors Paulina Luna and Laura Dearie each comforted a trembling, rescued puppy. Luna held one scared young dog while Douglas County volunteer firefighter Katie Lee applied emergency oxygen and brought blankets and water…. (February 16, 2010) —Photo: Mike Bonnicksen.
