“I’m an animal lover, so this is very gratifying,” said Volger. He had donned an ice rescue suit and waded into the freezing water to save the young deer, which had gone through the ice into the river near the Foster Road Bridge off Huron River Drive. Volger said the deer had an icicle beard and was not doing well when he arrived shortly after 8 a.m. Wearing the special gear, Volger walked on the ice to point where the deer had fallen through, with its head and front feet above ice.
